8 Ideas For Your Basement Renovation

A Basement renovation is one of the biggest money makers when it comes to resale value of your home. In fact, basement remodels gain back anywhere from 50 to 100 percent, depending on the quality of the materials.

If you’re thinking of doing a complete makeover but cannot decide whether to transform it into a wine cellar or an entertainment center, we have tips to get the most out of your underused space.

1. Storage Room

This may be the least invasive option for a basement renovation, but storage is always a necessity. One can do so many things with the basement, and maximizing it as a storage room is a popular trend. It’s essential to use the available space wisely without making it look too cramped.

Some ideas include installing shelves above the basement door and along the perimeter of your walls, mounting storage racks on the wall, and stacking wooden storage bins.

Vintage suitcases also make lovely decors that can pack (and hide) all your stuff inside.

2. Wine Cellar

Pick a spot where it’s cool, dark and dry so that your wine won’t be affected by shifts in temperature and humidity.

For the remaining space, add a small bar table and high stools to complete the tasting room area.

Tip: Wine racks should be easy to set up and dismantle so that you can rearrange your room easily.

3. Kids Playroom

If you have a small area to work on, consider making it into a playroom instead. Your kids will love to have a dedicated space where they can store their toys, run around and even set up their tents for an indoor camping party. Not to mention, this should keep their toys from creeping into other parts of the home.

Tip: Paint the wall and hang your kids’ framed artworks instead of using wallpaper.

4. Home Gym/ Yoga Room

Having a fitness space in your home makes it easier to achieve your goals since there is no commute involved and no confusing machines.

Are you an avid yogi? Create a relaxing space to perform your yoga poses and find your center. Try to use soft colors on your walls, furniture and decor to create a serene atmosphere.

Tip: Put a dehumidifier in the basement to control the humid and misty air inside.

5. Music Room

Whether you are a music enthusiast or part of a band, moving your instruments and practice room to the basement. One thing to make sure of is that there’s enough space for a stage and seating area to accommodate you and your band.

Adjustable floor lamps add drama to the corners while having the main overhead lighting should be placed at the center.

Soundproofing the room is another important factor in transforming your basement into a music studio. The last thing you want is to wake up everybody in the house while you are practicing. Use sound absorption solutions such as wool fibers, acoustic ceiling tiles and upholstered chairs.

Finally, decor can be in the form of musical instruments in wall display or framed old vinyl records.

6. Family Game Room

When the kids (and the kids at heart!) want to focus on getting their gaming in serious mode, it’s time to set up a game room for them. Make sure to organize all cables and wires to avoid tripping.

You may also want to go more traditional by adding a billiards or pool table or even a gaming arcade. If you choose this route, leave the rest of the space open to avoid having a cramped basement.

7. Home Office

A basement home office is perfect if you want to focus on your work. Don’t be tempted to go overboard with furniture or you’ll end up storing more and more inside the basement, which will create a cluttered environment.

The desk should be located at the focal point of the room and lighting should be set up to give your workspace enough illumination since there are no windows.

8. Guest Loft

Surprise your guests by turning your basement into an urban loft-inspired space. Achieve a loft vibe in your basement by adding minimal accessories and furniture while keeping your decor eclectic but classy. Add a convertible sofa bed and you have an instant guest bedroom too.

Now that you have these ideas for your basement renovation, it’s important to remember to be practical when transforming it into your desired space. Decide what type of room you’d like to convert your basement into and then plan on having a perfect design that’ll fit your needs.
